I’m writing this blog on an SNCF train from La Rochelle to Paris. My wife and some friends are returning from a cycling holiday. Weather and food have been great, as has been cycling through beautiful rural France on the Velo Francette. And, my “O” level French from 1982 has been useful!
Since my last post it’s been a busy time with my professional Toastmastering, with lots of weddings and some other events. The weekend before going away I had two terrific weddings, a same sex wedding at 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, by the Mall, London, then back to Orsett Hall in Essex for a Greek Cypriot and Nigerian / Irish wedding. I love the diversity of cultures coming together, and making bespoke plans to fit the bride and bridegroom’s vision.
It was a pleasure to meet Olympian Roger Black, MBE, when I toastmastered the Concrete Society annual dinner in May. His after dinner speech included an exciting recollection of the race in which, against all expectations, Team GB overcame the USA in the 4 x 400 metre relay to win gold at the World Champs in Tokyo, 1991. Redmond, Akabussi and Regis completed the legendary line-up. A great story…
In June, we held another street party in our Avenue. This has become a tradition for a few years now. This time, of course, we were celebrating Her Majesty, The Queen’s reign of seventy years. A great time was had by all. This time the weather was good to us, and I was able to deliver a short, appropriate speech to mark the day. Money was raised for our local Special Needs School, and a memorial tree for those in our road we sadly lost during Lockdown.
In July I was invited to attend a charity golf event in aid of the Stroke Association. My partner that day was the former Light Heavyweight Boxer, and between 1974 and 1978 the Champion of the World. I am talking about Mr John Conteh, MBE. John was great company all day, and in the fun Texas Scramble, proved his sporting prowess by sinking a long putt for an Eagle on the first, a par 5! A great sum was raised for this excellent charity, and our thanks to the Essex Provincial Stewards for putting on the day.
We look forward to getting to our home, our son and Labradors, and we have some sporting and social functions to attend. I have a busy calendar of Toastmastering events. Much to look forward to.
